USER EXPERIENCE - ACCESSIBILITY ON NETFLIX

Accessible user search and watch a movie on Netflix.

The goal of this project is to analyze and compare the user experience of Netflix with a regular and accessible user. The final deliverable is a new feature or system that would help increase the experience of using Netflix for those with additional needs. I choose to focus on a fully visually impaired user and test the site with a blindfold to understand the experience best.

I. HEURISTIC ANALYSIS
[ Mobile App / Mobile website / Desktop website ]

NON-ACCESSIBLE USER

+ Experience in all platforms are outstanding.
+ Well-organized information structure.
+ Easy to understand and control.
- The like and dislike button is meaningless.
- Some TV shows are not up-to-date.
- Unable to adjust the movie quality during watching it.
- Unable to speed up the movie.
ACCESSIBLE USER

- Lack of instructions while visiting and searching.
- Buttons are too small and too close to each other.
- Side menu content in mobile website is inadequate.
- Hard to reach the search bar and complete the search.
- Uncommunicative, uncontrollable, and unlearnable.

II. COMPETITIVE AUDIT
[ Amazon Prime, HULU, Youtube TV, HBO, Vimeo ]

+ NETFLIX has the best information structure among others in every platforms.
+ Mobiles apps experience are overall amazing.
+ HULU’s user experience is as good as NETFLIX’s, and even the movies are more diverse.
- Amazon Prime has the least satisfied experience in the content and usability because of its terrible interface.
- Vimeo as a indirect competitor has a very terrible score in the desktop website, but in the Mobile App is opposite.
- HBO has the worst experience in both platforms.

III. USER PERSONAS

IV.  NEW FEATURE FOR THE USER WITH ACCESSIBILITY
[ VOICEOVER guide on NETFLIX website ]

I view the NETFLIX website is divided by grids into three parts - the top roll, the movie play and info roll, and the movie- catagories roll. With the help of the grid, it might be possible for an accessible user to explore the website based on a keyboard, which could simply use UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT buttons along with the SPACEBAR and ENTER to navigate.

For example, three taps on the SPACEBAR could be led to the search bar, or press the SPACEBAR and UP together could faster jump to the Genres.

V. USER JOURNEY

I kindly asked someone else to behave like a full- blind user to test out the new feature for me. The goal is to search and watch a movie thorugh the search bar.

+ Pleasant with the smoother controll method which helps him to understand the website faster.
+ Easy to understand the structure with the grid.
+ The simple keyboard shortcut makes it better to reach and complete the task.
